There are 3 training modules required for Section Assistants, these include modules 1, 3 & GDPR. There are two parts to the training;

  • Learning - You can complete the learning requirements by completing the three below E-learning modules, alternately there are essential Information courses you can attend. To complete the E-learning please click the link below, once complete you will be displayed a certificate, please print your certificate or take a screen shot of the page, do not save the web link as an alternative to printing the certificate, as this will expire once you leave the browser and your certificate will be lost.
  • Validation - Once you have completed the learning you will need to validate your training with a training advisor, at this point the certificate can be shared with your training adviser and you will then have a small chat about the contents of the E-Learning and any further requirements shown below. Training advisors run drop in sessions at 1st Burnmoor and throughout the district, your section leader, AGSL or GSL can inform you when these sessions take place.

Module 1 - Essential Information

Essential Information is a mandatory module for nearly all adults in Scouting and alongside the GDPR module.  They provide the basic information required for individuals getting started in adult roles in Scouting, vital to ensuing that all young people can enjoy safe Scouting. Topics covered:

  • The Fundamentals of Scouting
  • Structure and support
  • Safety in Scouting
  • Safeguarding- child protection
  • Safeguarding- anti-bullying
  • Data Protection

Validation Requirements - Complete the Check your Knowledge Chart and discuss your responses to the questions and reflect on the Fundamentals and key policies of The Scouts with a Training Adviser to demonstrate your understanding and confidence to act in accordance with each core area.

Module 3 - Tools for the Role

Tools for the Role is a mandatory module for Section Leaders, Assistant Section Leaders and Section Assistants. It covers the basic information on the individual’s role or area of responsibility and some practical help to get the individual started in the role. Topics covered:

  • Features of the section
  • Roles with in the section
  • Using activities and games
  • Youth shaped Scouting
  • Promoting positive behavior

Validation Requirement - Assist in running a section meeting; and reflect on this in a discussion with your Training Adviser.


GDPR Training is a mandatory module for all appointments. It covers the basic information that individual’s need to know in relation to the General Data Protection Regulations, what this means for their role and for Scouting and how to effectively align with it. Topics covered:

  • Personal Data
  • Individuals' rights
  • Consent
  • Accountability & Governance

September Durham Scouts launch BUILD, inviting as many new adults as possible to join us "Build #skillsforlife" for more young people.

Whether you can spare an hour a month or a day a year, we have loads of opportunities both behind the scenes and directly supporting young people. With full support and award-winning training, you can volunteer on a flexible basis. Not only is it incredibly rewarding and great fun, you’ll learn some brilliant skills transferable to the workplace too. We welcome volunteers from every community and background. You don’t need to have been a Scout. You just need to believe in a more positive future and the difference we can make together.

4 Week Challenge

Volunteer for just 4 weeks and be amazed at the difference you can make. 

  • Week 1: See what we get up to.
  • Week 2: Start to help out a little more.
  • Week 3: Get a little more involved
  • Week 4: You'll know if scouting is for you.

We have a wide range of flexible roles either supporting young people or behind the scenes. Any help is truly amazing.

Why Volunteer?

There are numerous reasons to volunteer, just take a look at some of the reasons our adult team give up their time at 1st Burnmoor.

  • To learn some new skills - it's not just our young people who gain new skills from scouting. Some of our adults have learned outdoor skills like map reading and fire lighting, while others have learned how to edit a website and how to project plan a small event.
  • To spend more time with your children - many of our adult volunteers are parents of members of beavers, cubs or scouts and by volunteering, they get to share some of the experiences our young people gain at scouts.
  • To give a little back - some of our adults enjoyed scouting as a young person and have chosen to share some of the skills they learned with the scouts of today.
  • It's great fun - all our adult team have a great time, it's really rewarding to see the confidence of our young people grow throughout their scouting journey, a little bit of support to reach the top of a climbing wall can go a long way for our young people!
  • For the activities - it's a great chance to get outdoors, get active and to try some activities for yourself.
