1st Burnmoor Scouts awarded a life-changing Youth Investment Fund grant to transform its services for young people.

1st Burnmoor Scouts has been awarded a transformational Youth Investment Fund grant to transform its youth service offer to young people across the group and many others locally. It is very welcome news for young people supported by 1st Burnmoor Scouts who will benefit from the generous funding and means that the group will be able to support many more young people when the project is complete. The funding will transform not only our hall but the grounds that surrounds it. 

1st Burnmoor Scouts is one of 140 youth centres in England to benefit from a Youth Investment Fund grant, announced by the funder, the Department for Culture, Media and Sport and the charity Social Investment Business, who is delivering the grant programme in partnership with Key Fund, National Youth Agency and Resonance. The Youth Investment Fund is part of the Government’s National Youth Guarantee to transform and level up opportunities for young people in England. The Youth Investment Fund, of over £300 million, aims to build, renovate, or extend youth services in the parts of the country where new spaces and new opportunities are most needed.

The Youth Investment Fund grants announced today are worth over £90 million. 

Over £90 million of grants were also announced to 43 youth services in March 2023, and another £70 million announced to 44 youth centres in August 2023.  This means that so far a total of over £250 million has been invested in youth services across England and will benefit thousands of young people.

Our Youth Investment Fund grant will enable youth services like 1st Burnmoor Scouts to transform health, wellbeing, skills, and opportunities for young people. It is a ground-breaking opportunity to prioritise the needs of young people and deliver the life-changing services they need, creating a more equal society for future generations.  

A Youth Investment Fund grant will transform 1st Burnmoor Scouts’s services for young people. It means work can start on site this summer and the service should open its doors to young people by the end of the year. Further details will be shared about how Scouting will continue during this time.

The development will include refurbishment of the hall and grounds, new climbing and caving facilities, solar panels and ground source heating, and so much more. 

 

 

Young people supported by 1st Burnmoor Scouts played a key role in developing this exciting new project. Scouts and Explorers played a major role in the development of our exciting plans. From the beginning of the application process, forums and meetings were held, and videos and statements were produced until a clear vision emerged of what facilities and activities our young people would like to see at 1st Burnmoor Scouts.

 

Culture Secretary Lucy Frazer said:

"I want to see every young person have someone to talk to, something to do, and somewhere to go outside of the classroom, no matter where they are from, to help maximise their potential in life."

"This next round of funding from the Youth Investment Fund will help nearly 20,000 more young people achieve this goal."

"We have now committed to building or refurbishing over 220 projects in some of the country’s most underserved areas, creating more opportunities for young people to gain the skills needed to succeed in life and stopping them from falling through the cracks."

It will enable our group to extend the community work it already does to more people and make our Scouting even better.

"For over 100 years Scouting has offered an opportunity for young people to learn amazing skills for life through regular meetings mixed with adventurous activities.

The investment in 1st Burnmoor and the development of the grounds will not only benefit the young people of 1st Burnmoor or Scouting in Chester-le-Street but also help to offer adventurous activities to the wider community giving more young people a chance to experience Scouting.

This recognition by the Youth Investment Fund in the hard work and dedication that the volunteers of 1st Burnmoor put into providing amazing experiences for the young people of their group is humbling but well deserved.

A Huge well done to our volunteers who completed the Coast to Coast this June!
